Each month an active member of our AAE Connection Community will be highlighted.

Say hello to Dr. @G. Matthew Brock

Position:  I started SoutheasternEndodontics in September of 2002 and brought in my current friend and partner, Yvette Burns, May of 2003.  We graduated UT Memphis together in 1999 and planned the practice together while finishing our respective residencies.

Career Highlights:

  • I started my practice from scratch.
  • I quickly became in involved with AAE committee work
  • I have been a track chair for several AAE meetings
  • I have spoken at several AAE meetings
  • I received the New Practitioner Spirit of Service Award in May of 2014

Why Endodontics: My stepfather, John McSpadden, developed the McSpadden compactor in the 1970’s and then developed NiTi rotary instruments in the early 1990’s.  I worked for the dental company two summers while in college and really enjoyed it and decided that I liked the lifestyle and freedom of dentistry better than medicine.  I took the MCAT & DAT but decided to only apply to dental school so I could see and be a part of my future family.

Best Piece of Career Advice: Practice the way you want, not the way other people say or think you should.  There are a lot of ways to do things, but you have to ultimately be comfortable with your day to day lifestyle.

Endo Challenge: The biggest challenge for me is time management between career, family, and community philanthropy.

Reason for Becoming an AAE member:  I am an active runner, snow skier, and enjoy travel out west to Jackson Hole area as well as Sea Island or 30A for the beach.

Fun Fact: I enjoy travelling and can't wait to explore some warm destinations once the world becomes a bit more safe after COVID.

Community Question: I personally value the interaction of meeting in person for our AAE meetings.  In this day and age of virtual meetings and online CE what do you think we need to do to keep the AAE a strong and viable organization for the next generation?
