Say Hello to Dr. @Steven D. Robertson

Position:

I am a general dentist (and only an associate level AAE member) that owns and a solo practice in Charlotte, North Carolina. I want to become an Endodontist and will be applying to Residency programs next spring.

Career Highlights:

  • Former collegiate baseball player (once upon a time)
  • 2016 MUSC graduate
  • Spent 2 years as an associate in the beautiful New River Valley of Virginia before purchasing a practice from a retiring doctor 3 years ago in my hometown
  • Have fallen in love with Endodontics in the last 2 years and am hopeful to attend a residency program beginning 2023.

Why Endodontics:

I love implants and what they can offer, but I firmly believe the natural dentition is still superior. Saving teeth is what I love about my job the most. Endodontics are often the foundation to be able to do just that.

Best Piece of Career Advice:

It is hard to believe I am beginning my 6th year of private practice. It goes so fast! Always schedule time for yourself and the people that are most important to you, and if you practice alone remember you’re not alone in this!

Endo Challenge:

What isn’t challenging about Endo, particularly early on? Or practice ownership for that matter? Over time the most challenging parts of my day to day have become patient management, and I have found honest, candid conversations with patients to be one of the most effective ways to build trust with them (and let me sleep well at night). Learning how to communicate with patients and deliver bad news is certainly an art.

Reason for Becoming an AAE member:

The AAE from the outside seemed like such a tight community and while I am just beginning to get involved and will attend the annual meeting next year, it does seem like a wonderful resource and group of practitioners so far.

Fun Fact:

I worked construction one summer in college and learned enough that I now enjoy remodeling work. I flipped my first house and completely renovated my office myself and do most of my own equipment maintenance as well. While there is always more to do, it is nice to be able to fix it all yourself! (And I have one month to finish all of my ongoing projects before my wife and I welcome our first child!)

Community Question: (A question that community members can respond to)

What is the ONE THING you wish your referring doctors would do that would help you the most in your practice?
