Lecture Description:

For clinical endodontists in private practice, the majority of the clinical experience typically involves conventional non-surgical root canal therapy, non-surgical RCT retreatment and surgical endodontic treatment. Two additional case scenarios present themselves on a much less frequent basis – teeth with a history of a prior avulsion and teeth with immature roots requiring endodontic management. This course will focus on a review of treatment principles of these two scenarios illustrated with a series of individual case presentations from one private practice as well as with some cases from an endodontic residency program. The importance of follow-up care and recall exams will be highlighted.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of the session, the learner should be able to:

  1. Describe the challenges encountered with managing teeth with immature roots and open apices.
  2. Review past, present and potential future treatment modalities for teeth with an open apex.
  3. List critical factors needing to be addressed in the early management of avulsed permanent teeth.
  4. Illustrate case scenarios where initial emergency treatment was not ideal, but through improvised follow-up treatment, long term results can be achieved.
  5. Recognize the importance of recall exams and follow-up care in the evolution of a practitioner's treatment philosophy.
